A BRIEF BIBLE STUDY

By Rev. Robert Fertado

"...do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..."
(Colossians 3:17)

Many Christians use the name of Jesus when praying over their food, for the sick, in an emergency etc., but why isn't the name of Jesus used universally in Baptism today? The early church baptized while speaking the name of Jesus over the Christian converts according to Jesus' teaching. Today the majority of Christian churches baptize using the titles Father, Son, and Holy Ghost instead of the name of JESUS. The Bible tells us in Colossians 3:17 to "...do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." The name of the Son is Jesus (Matthew 1:21), the name of the Father is Jesus (John 5:43), and the name fo the Holy Ghost is Jesus (John 14:26). In only speaking the name of Jesus over converts in water baptism, Christians do not deny the existence of God in the three manifestations (as the Father in Creation, the Son in Redemption, and by the power and leading of the Holy Ghost), but they obey the Scriptures by using the family name (Ephesians 3:14-15), and the only name "given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12) -- the name of JESUS. "For in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily..." (Colossians 2:9).

Matthew 28:19 was a command by Jesus to baptize in the name (singular). The Apostles understood what Jesus meant. They knew the name, and used that name in baptism.

Look to the Bible to see what name was used in baptism. Compare the difference:
In the Name of Jesus In the Titles, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Acts 2:38
Acts 8:16
Acts 10:43-48
Acts 19:4-5
NONE!

By the year 325 A.D., the original teaching of using Jesus' name was being abandoned.

LET'S RETURN TO THE ORIGINAL TEACHING OF JESUS AND EARLY BELIEVERS. THE BIBLE WAY! THE ORIGINAL WAY! (Jude 3, Revelation 22:18-19)
